Go Big or Go Home (But Don’t Go Back to the Office)

August 4, 2010

I don’t take a lot of time off work, but when I do, I go big or go home. Here, some proof:

No one ever really knew how bad Gramp’s hearing was. He liked the TV loud. Sometimes I would stay over at his house, sleeping in one of the upstairs bedrooms. I could hear every word of the basketball game or the 11 o’clock news being broadcast on the TV in the living room. It was like that.

Natural Opposites

June 4, 2010

My total cholesterol was 217 – the count had been more than 100 points lower when I’d had it checked two years prior. I had it checked again two weeks later and although it had dropped to 200, I was still really freaked out. I was in my late 20s for pete’s sake, way too young to be dealing with that kind of issue.

The Biggest Small Crime

May 4, 2010

I distinctly remember watching Pee-wee’s Playhouse on Saturday mornings, eating Apple Jacks straight from the box while screaming really loud every time someone said the secret word. I think perhaps my parents were never more aware of their crime than at those moments when they were jerked from their peaceful slumber.

On Getting Carded

April 4, 2010

I almost didn’t know what to do when I got my card. I was at first paralyzed by the overwhelming number of options I now had, but paralysis soon gave way to a heady feeling. Happiness. Sheer joy! I was finally able to read and listen to and view every single thing I’ve ever wanted to, all without spending my life savings.

Gone to Sheridan, Wyoming in My Mind

March 4, 2010

I grew up in New England. My family took vacations to Florida, California and up and down the Eastern seaboard. We liked Mickey and Minnie, Knott’s Berry Farm and Hershey, Pennsylvania. Actually, my mother, brother and I liked those characters and places; my father, on the other hand, liked places where he could hunt, places where wild animal sightings outnumbered human sightings.

It’s Not That Complicated

February 4, 2010

The world is one big shade of gray. The longer humans live, the more we evolve, the more complicated things seem to get. In this country alone, Americans struggle every day with complex issues on large and small scales – health care, seemingly endless conflicts with faraway nations, how to feed a family of four solely on unemployment, and on and on.

Hope is the Thing with Feathers

January 4, 2010

Somewhere along the line I found hope again, cheesy and cliche though that may sound. It was a long, slow, arduous process riddled with visits to the shrink, but eventually I found people who dragged me out of my sad, pathetic existence and reminded me who I really was, who I really am — smart, funny, cute, strong and independent with really good hair. ;)

Everyone’s Waiting

December 4, 2009

“Everyone’s Waiting” gets me thinking about my life, about the people I love, about the people who love me and about what I’m seeking in my short time on this planet. As I watch what happens to each of the characters, as I witness what happens to them at the ends of their respective lives, I can’t help but consider how I will feel when my loved ones begin to die. Will I have regrets? How will I cope? Will I want to cope if my husband dies before me? Will the people I loved know how much I loved them? Do they know I will continue to love them even though I can’t hold them anymore?

Angrily Yours

November 4, 2009

I had this whole post written about how I’m not usually an angry person, but that flying the friendly skies (Notice how rarely you hear that phrase anymore? Yeah, there’s a reason.) gets the ire pumping through my veins like almost nothing else.
The post sat in draft status for a day, leaving me with plenty [...]

Like a Banana with a Disease

October 14, 2009

It started the very day I was born. I managed to annoy the hell out of my mom by not only trying to come out breech — resulting in the doctor having to jam his hand in there to flip me around — but having the audacity to weigh in at a whopping 9 pounds, 14 ½ ounces.

About this author

As of March 2010, for the first time in her life, Kate Wade has her very own office at work. It comes complete with a sink, refrigerator and a back door (escape route?), clearly its most important feature. Her office has another door that she can close when she needs privacy, such as when she wants to take photos like the one you see here.
